The Management and Leadership Pathway

The Management and Leadership Pathway (MLP) is a unique and nationally-regarded program aimed at training future health care leaders in health policy, management, delivery innovation, and entrepreneurship. Since the MLP was founded in 2008, the pathway has grown in popularity and become an integral part of the BWH internal medicine residency.

CURRICULUM

The pathway provides residents with an enhanced curriculum that centers around three core topic areas:
  • Health policy and delivery reform. Residents learn from experts about how the US healthcare system, including its strengths and weaknesses, recent and current policy reforms, including the transition to value-based care models, and about opportunities for improving the system.
  • Management & clinical leadership. Residents are taught essential leadership skills through workshops led by Harvard and MGB faculty, including finance and accounting principles relevant for physician leaders, negotiation and conflict resolution, and public speaking. This is accompanied by experiential learning from local, state, and national leaders of health systems and other influential health care organizations.
  • Entrepreneurship & innovation. Residents meet with leaders and entrepreneurs from some of the most innovative and disruptive startups and companies in health care focused on topics such as digital health, care delivery innovation, and payment reform.
The curriculum is delivered during four 2-week blocks during residents’ junior and senior years. The program is tailored to the interests of participants and is focused on career mentoring for those with a wide range of interests. Activities during MLP blocks include:
  • Participating in seminars and skills sessions.
  • Traveling for site visits to health care organizations in and around Boston, New York City, and Washington DC.
  • Networking with health care leaders, who provide experiential learning and career mentorship advice.
  • Attending local and national conferences related to the pathway’s core concepts.

Frequently Asked Questions

All BWH internal medicine residents are welcome to participate, including those in the categorical program, primary care programs, and the medicine-pediatrics program. Graduates go on to practice general medicine and specialty care.

The MLP is designed to accommodate all levels of previous background or training. Some participants have prior degrees in business or public policy, but many do not and are first exposed to these topics during the MLP curriculum. Interested residents may also apply for the John McArthur Program to earn their MBA at Harvard Business School during their residency training.
